About This Song

I originally wrote this song in the presence of a friend named Kaʻau McKenney, in the summer of 2010. We were in the process of planning curriculum for a summer class called Hawaiian Canoe Culture, offered by Punahou School. In addition to being his teaching assistant, I was also teaching him slack-key, and felt that this song would be a good exercise to teach to him. The song was recorded on my laptop in it’s initial form, but was not quite ready to be taught. It unfortunately would not be finished until a year later, when he unexpectedly passed away. The song eventually became a peaceful but bittersweet memorial to Kaau.  This song is dedicated to the McKenney family and to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
